Cherries and Eagles seeking post World Cup points

Bournemouth and Crystal Palace meet on the south coast on Saturday and both sides will be eager to pick up their first points since the Premier League returned.

The Cherries lost at Newcastle in the EFL Cup in their first post World Cup outing and then went down 2-0 at Chelsea.

Palace slumped to a 3-0 defeat at home to Fulham after being reduced to 10 men in the first half and then nine early on in the second.

Home advantage gives Bournemouth the edge

Bournemouth won their last two home games before the World Cup, with both of those successes coming against Everton (in the EFL Cup and then in the league). The Cherries have been better defensively since Gary O’Neil took charge and at home they have been in reasonable form – winning three of their last five and suffering just two losses in their last seven.

At a big price, the Cherries look good value for a win here against an Eagles outfit who tend to struggle on their travels.

Palace’s last away day was a 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest and they have managed just one win in seven attempts away, losing three of those games and scoring just five goals in total.

Goals could be in short supply

Palace have failed to score in each of their last three games and in four of their last five away from home in the Premier League.

Bournemouth did give a fairly good account of themselves in their 2-0 defeat at Chelsea but still came away with nothing and without scoring. That performance did suggest they can beat this out of sorts Palace team with home advantage, but this is unlikely to be a high-scoring affair and a 1-0 win for O’Neil’s men looks a reasonable correct score selection.

The Cherries have only managed nine goals in their eight home games so far and this fixture looks a good option for fans of the under 2.5 goals market, but given Palace’s away struggles it looks worth backing Bournemouth at a big price.
