Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa predictions for the New Year’s Day Premier League clash in London. Can Spurs boost their top four hopes with a win? Read on for all our free predictions and betting tips.
- Spurs have won six of their eight home games in the Premier League.
- Tottenham have conceded first in each of their last nine games in all competitions.
- Villa have scored in their last four games.
Spurs face Villa test
Tottenham salvaged a point at Brentford in their first fixture after the World Cup and they will be looking to make home advantage count when they entertain Aston Villa on New Year’s Day.
Villa went down 3-1 at home to Liverpool in their Boxing Day game and they now face another tricky game against a team chasing a top four finish.
Spurs a formidable opponent at home
Spurs fell 2-0 behind at Brentford but fought back to secure a 2-2 draw in a Jekyll and Hyde display. Antonio Conte’s men looked bereft of ideas in the first half and only seemed to click into gear after Ivan Toney scored the Bees’ second, but they should be able to put in a more complete performance on home soil.
The North Londoners have six wins and two defeats from eight home league games so far and their losses have come at the hands of fellow top six sides.
Villa, who sit 12th, have a poor away record with just one win, five points and five goals in eight trips so far – but they may be able to at least grab a consolation effort in this fixture.
Tottenham are a short price to win so for a bit more value a home win and both teams to score looks a reasonable option.
Clean sheets have been a real issue for Conte’s side of late and they have gone nine games without a shut-out – and they have conceded first in all of those games.
Villa’s away goals tally is poor but they have scored in each of their last four games overall, facing Manchester United and Liverpool during that run, so they should be able to find a way through against Spurs’ out-of-sorts defence.
Spurs can win with room to spare
I may be expecting a Villa goal, but Spurs can still win with a bit of breathing space and a 3-1 home victory is the correct score selection.
The visitors have conceded 12 goals across their last four away games and if Tottenham perform as they did against Brentford in the final 30 minutes or so for a sustained period they should be too strong for Unai Emery’s men.
Harry Kane always stands out as an anytime scorer for Tottenham but another option ahead of this clash is Dejan Kulusevski. The Swede only has one goal in 10 league games but he has spent time on the sidelines through injury, and he showed glimpses of getting back to form against Brentford as he managed to get a shot away and played a role in their equalising goal.
